Geographies of Freedom plot

An old-fashioned newsreel voice calmly tells about how the "simple population" of the Netherlands Antilles, thanks to the arrival of huge oil refineries, are being released from their "primitive conditions" and an end to a "deficient medical care and lack of hygiene". This sequence of archive images of the neocolonial bond between multinational Shell and the islands constantly contains these kinds of abrasive moments. The film is part of a larger research project on freedom. This project explores how geography, architecture and law create ideas about freedom, and how these subsequently impact on physical space.
