Ge-wu Zhongguo plot
In the summer of 2000, filmmaker Wayne Peng traveled to Shanghai to find actors for a commercial. He ended up at 'Dreams 52' dance school, where old Liang Yi teaches an ambitious group of young people to dance in what he calls the Broadway style: jazz dance, tap dance and rock 'n' roll. Peng was captivated by the students' dedication and enthusiasm for a dance form that may be unfamiliar in the west, but has always belonged to the counterculture in China. This documentary tells the life story of 70-year-old Liang Yi, who became enthralled by Hollywood films as a teenager and determined to become the Gene Kelly of Taiwan. Yi's favorite student, 30-year-old Yang Yang, is known as 'the dancer who also sings' and has devoted her life to her dream of becoming famous. An even younger generation of dance students no longer sees jazz dance as a political or social statement, but simply as a way to express oneself individually.
