Finding Willard plot
In 2018, Belgian theater maker Tom Struyf accidentally ends up in American Willard. A hamlet with one street, which opens onto a huge lake. On one side of the street are wooden houses, which have visibly seen better days. On the other side are the ruins of the Willard Asylum for the Chronic Insane. Struyf gradually becomes obsessed with Willard and his inhabitants. Especially when he learns that the founder of the institution, the feminist doctor Dorothea Dix, was inspired in her progressive approach by psychiatric care in Geel, Belgium, where patients are cared for in families. He returns to Willard several times to speak to people and film. And as he discovers the contemporary echoes of history – social, economic and even ecological – the project becomes more and more intertwined with his personal life.
