In August 1971, César Benjamin is arrested during student protests against the Brazilian military dictatorship. He is a minor, but is tried as an adult and sentenced to 13 years in prison. Thanks to the fiery struggle that his mother Iramaya waged in close cooperation with the Swedish branch of Amnesty International, he was released after five years.
