Exile in Sarajevo plot
“Exile in Sarajevo” is an account of the siege of Sarajevo. Unlike the usual television reports, the fate of the civilian population is described in detail, especially that of children and young people. We are introduced to Nirvana, a young talented dancer, who is killed when she unexpectedly steps into the sights of a 'sniper'. An illustrated diary of 8-year-old Amira turns out to be a poignant reconstruction of the brutal murder of her relatives and her school friends. The final stages of the siege form the broader context of the story and include the massacre in the market square, the UN and UNPROFOR press conferences, NATO missions and the liberation and reunification of the various boroughs.
