Escadrons de la Mort: L'École Française plot

War always involves violence and death, but things get really nasty when soldiers face armed rebels who use methods that have nothing to do with the Geneva Conventions. The French experienced this first in Indo-China and then in Algeria in 1957. During that war, methods were developed by the French, the most important characteristic of which was the application of far-reaching torture techniques. Director Marie-Monique Robin speaks with veterans and illustrates their stories with images from the feature film 'The Battle of Algiers', which was used as an instructional film for soldiers. Robin concludes that the French method was followed by the United States, among others. Conversations with soldiers and victims, partly filmed with the hidden camera, also show that the French influence on the military rulers in countries such as Argentina and Chile in the 1960s and 1970s was considerable.
