Erik(a) plot
"The Man Who Became Women's Downhill Champion"
Erika Schinegger won the Women's Ski World Cup in 1966. The girl posed a bit awkwardly for the cameras, she wasn't exactly mother's prettiest either. When the International Olympic Committee (IOC) introduced the sex test in 1967, it suddenly turned out that Erika was actually Erik. No one noticed, even, as it turned out, not Erika herself. Erik was born with his genitals fused internally. Intersexuality was a phenomenon that people could not deal with at all in 1966. The sports world was silent in all keys. Erika's skiing career ended and Erik was banned by the Austrian sports association. Erik Schinegger, now 68, tells in this documentary how uncomfortable he felt as a woman and how his environment reacted to the news.
