En Nu de Droom Over Is... plot
Michael Arnoldus Slory (1935) is generally recognized as the most important poet of Suriname. Raised in Totness, the capital of the 'coconut district' Coronie, and raised in the Catholic faith, Slory developed an interest in Surinamese culture with its winti rituals and a wealth of music. After writing two more collections of poems in Dutch, he decided from 1970 to use Sranangtongo, the Surinamese vernacular. His poems have contributed to the national consciousness of Suriname, but because the political developments after independence disappointed him, Slory has said goodbye to the arena of public debate. Despite his great reputation, his work is hardly read in his country these days.
