Ellis Island, an islet in New York Bay, was the main gateway to the US from 1892 to 1954. About 12 million immigrants looking to try their luck in the US entered the country through Ellis Island. Among them are the Polish film producer Sam Goldwyn, the Irishman and later mayor of New York William O'Dwyer and the Sicilian boy Salvatore Lucania, who would later become the infamous mob boss Lucky Luciano.
