A great, unknown drama is set in Western Sahara, formerly the Spanish Sahara. In 1975, Spain withdrew from its colony, without the UN-demanded referendum on self-determination. Morocco seized its opportunity to annex the neighboring country through the so-called Green March. The occupation continues to this day. The Moroccan government is silent about what is happening in Western Sahara: the oppression of the Saharawi (literally: inhabitants of the Sahara). The Spanish filmmakers penetrated the country with a simple video camera and secretly filmed the many abuses they encountered for four and a half years. The prohibited material consists of testimonials that have not been previously documented. The Saharawi must abide by the Wall of Silence and not utter the words 'Western Sahara' or 'referendum', so they are talking about The Problem. Any sign of their nationality (songs, flags, demonstrations) is prohibited, and torture, rape and disappearances are the order of the day.
