Devo plot

This documentary is about a remarkable band of outsiders from Akron, Ohio, who, in the 1970s, wanted to express their emotions and find a whole new way to express themselves. The members of Devo struggled with every aspect of life, grappling with traditions, societal norms, and culture. Through their music, they questioned everything that made no sense to them. Above all, they believed that society wasn't progressing, but rather reverting to a more primitive form.

An entertaining, cleverly edited documentary about the wacky avant-garde band Devo, which enjoyed brief worldwide success with the hit single "Whip It" but quickly faded into obscurity. The interviews with the band members are top-notch, and director Chris Smith incorporates a wealth of fascinating archival material, but none of this can obscure the fact that the band's rise and fall isn't particularly interesting. Besides, I don't really care for the music.

Great documentary. I've always been an admirer of this band, and they deserve the utmost respect. I knew they put a lot of messages and symbolism into their work, but truly everything was considered. They had built a truly all-encompassing act. In videos and interviews, these men were always fully focused on delivering their message.

I think many people won't understand how impressive this is. It's theater, film, music, and dance performance all rolled into one. With a layered message about the absurdity of existence. Performed to perfection by exceptionally skilled musicians.

Their wealth of footage, along with interviews and voiceovers, is perfectly packaged in a truly captivating documentary about one of the most fascinating music groups ever. And devo's influence still resonates throughout the world. Japanese hit band "Polysics," for example, is clearly deeply inspired by devo. They admit this themselves, but it's clearly audible.

Go see this documentary and listen to some music. Hopefully, it will also change your perspective on art and culture and experience the joy of being swept up in the absurdity and laughing because you don't understand it. That's the power of devo.

And yes, their "career," in terms of how many hits and how many albums, is a very narrow way of looking at music and bands. It has nothing to do with their creative and cultural power and artistic impact. That was Devo's goal, and that's how you should measure their success. And then they're a very big band. Very big.
