De Lijst van Mengelberg plot
Concertgebouw conductor Willem Mengelberg was severely punished after the Second World War for his Nazi sympathies. He was dismissed as a collaborator and traitor. However, it now appears that he was actively involved in saving dozens of Jews. In the early years of the war, the conductor wrote dozens of letters to the Nazi authorities in which he successfully pleaded not to put Jews on transport. Mengelberg has committed himself to 48 people, 34 of whom have survived the war. Relatives of survivors now express their doubts about the stamp of war criminal that Mengelberg was given.
