De Laatste Joodse Zomer plot

In the summer of 1942, the Antwerp authorities collaborated with the German occupiers to arrest and deport more than 10,000 Jews. Only 500 of them would return after the war. This dark chapter in Antwerp's history has long been hushed up, but now a group of sixth-year students from a super-diverse school are bringing this painful past to the attention. They meet relatives of both the Jewish victims and the police officers involved. For these young people, the past may not be their own history, but it is a history that influences them.

Vander Beken invited several Belgian students to participate in reconstructions of events in Antwerp during World War II. These reconstructions are based on the stories of one survivor, but also on the descendants of people who were involved. Remarkably, it involves more than just relatives from both sides. Despite the artificial setting, this leaves a deep impression on both the relatives and the students themselves. That impact is more interesting than the story itself, unless you know little about the Holocaust or Shoah.
