De Gifcirkel plot

Criminals have discovered the chemical waste trade as a lucrative source of income. Campania, the region around Naples, is its symbol and has been called the largest illegal dump of chemical waste in Europe. Here the Camorra, the local branch of the mafia, dumps industrial waste from all over Europe and beyond. They pour it into rivers, bury it in agricultural fields or burn it by the side of the road. Vegetables such as broccoli and tomatoes are grown on the contaminated soil for the Dutch market, among others.
