De Gevoelige Plaat plot

This is a series of 1,250 three-second photo portraits from the photo archive of Jakobus Merkelbach and his daughter Mies. The portraits pass by without any historical frame or indicative music. The people portrayed, mainly from the wealthy middle class of Amsterdam from the period 1913-1970, initially remain at a distance and anonymous, even though they look straight into the camera. Gradually, however, a penetrating sense of the historical and emotional sense of time permeates through the five generations of newly engaged betrothed, husbands and visitors.
