Making mistakes is human, we are told from an early age. Still, the doctor is not interested in the reassuring effect that this seems to have. His or her mistakes have far-reaching consequences, not least for the patients. They are accused of an incorrect diagnosis, incorrect medication or negligence. Rightly so, the impact on the doctor's life is huge. The doctor suffers from guilt and shame at work and at home, as well as insecurity that is often felt long after an incident.
