Das Boot: Welterfolg aus der Tiefe plot
In 1983, "Das Boot" received six Oscar nominations. However, that success did not come without a struggle. The film is based on a novel by the then war correspondent Lothar-Günther Buchheim. In 1976, the largest film studios in West Germany tried to turn this material into a German-American blockbuster. But Buchheim thought the script was too cliché. German director Wolfgang Petersen must take over and save "Das Boot". It should be a technically perfect blockbuster. The finished film is controversial in Germany, but the international reception has been overwhelming. Many of the cast became famous through the film; "Das Boot" becomes a classic. The documentary describes the making of this most successful German film of all time. Featuring unpublished interviews with the film's actors and creators.
