Convento plot
In 1980, the Dutch Geraldine and Kees Zwanikken left their successful artistic careers behind and moved to Convento São Francisco de Mértola, a 400-year-old monastery in a southern province of Portugal. When they first arrived the building was in an extreme state of disrepair, so they took on the seemingly impossible task of making their new home habitable. Kees died a few years later, but Geraldine and her children, Christiaan and Louis, continued to live in the monastery. Over the past 30 years, the Zwanikkens have transformed their property, originally built for an abbot and twelve monks, into a surreal fantasy land.
