Coeurope plot
Charleroi was once known for its vibrant coal and steel industry. The Belgian city near Brussels used to be a magnet for men from all over Europe who wanted to work there. In 2016, Charleroi symbolizes the problem that the entire continent is now grappling with: rising unemployment, immigration, petty crime and a growing sense of unease. Moreover, it always seems to rain from the gray cloud cover above the dilapidated housing blocks and dead factory sites. Charleroi has become an eerie place, which is confirmed by the stories of residents and passers-by in this poetic film. Archival images of a vibrant industry are interspersed with portraits of citizens who are all dealing with a world that has changed.
