Theater Carré is celebrating its 125th anniversary this season. How did this majestic theater on the Amstel come about at the end of the nineteenth century? Oscar Carré was, just like Joop van den Ende now, a man who wanted to realize his dream at all costs. With the construction of theaters in Vienna, Cologne and the famous Carré theater in Amsterdam, he managed to rise above the fairground entertainment. He elevated the circus to a true art form. Based on special archive material and colorful images of the annual World Christmas Circus in Theater Carré, director Leo de Boer brings the entrepreneur Oscar Carré back to life. The circus heart still beats in the family dynasty. Maurice Carré Sr., Oscar's grandson, has worked in the circus all his life. And Louann Carré, Maurice's daughter, caused a furore with a flying act in which she performed a juggling act at a height of thirty meters, hanging by her hair. The family lived for fifteen years in a circus train that took them across the country. Louann's search for the myths surrounding her famous great-grandfather is at the heart of the documentary.
