The Tea Route is the highest and most dangerous ancient trade route in China. The route starts in Western Yunnan and winds through the Tibetan Plateau along the edge of the Himalayas, towards Nepal, Bhutan and finally India. For over two thousand years, tea was transported by mule along this route. Riders still trek by mule over the narrow muddy trails and through inhospitable mountain passes. Today they transport the building materials for the road that will wipe out the traditional way of life in this area.
