Cesta Bratstva in Enotnosti plot

On November 3, 1988, director Maja Weiss started her road movie, for which she traveled through the former Yugoslav republics. The starting point was the village of Metlika on the B51, a main road that was traditionally known as the road of brotherhood and unity, and during the war turned into a road of death and destruction. The B51 was created at the end of the Second World War, when a new road connecting Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade and the Adriatic Sea was both an economic and an ideological necessity. During her journey, Weiss spoke to several residents of the areas she crossed about the land in which they grew up and which no longer exists. Weiss, too, grew up "cherished by the unity and brotherhood of the Yugoslav republics." Her teachers taught her to love Tito, and her parents taught her to appreciate George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
