Bye plot

When Ed van der Elsken is told that he has incurable prostate cancer, there is only one way for him to go through the coming agony: to provide a counterbalance by making the approaching death tangible and at the heart of his work. The film Bye is a self-portrait, which means that the sick protagonist and the filmmaker are one and the same. The film ends a few months before his death.
