Birth of Hollywood plot
In celebration of Hollywood's 100th anniversary, Paul Merton explores the beginnings of Hollywood. The first episode highlights DW Griffith, one of Hollywood's most influential and controversial directors of the 1920s. Through his epic films, Hollywood became the center of the world for cinema. The second episode deals with the turbulent 1920s and in particular the rise and fall of comic genius Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbucke. The third episode focuses on the origins of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios and producer Irving Thalberg. Thalberg was instrumental in the transition from silent films to sound films in the 1930s.
