Two years ago, Wolfgang Schäuble caused a stir with claims about Helmut Kohl's 1999-2000 donation scandal. Schäuble told documentary maker Stephan Lamby that there have never been anonymous donors and that black cash registers have been around since the days of Flick. That would mean that Helmut Kohl lied in 1999 when he claimed to have received about two million German marks from donors between 1993 and 1998. That would also mean that the 'word of honor' that the former chancellor then invoked was worth nothing.
