Baghdad On/Off plot
Iraqi filmmaker Saad Salman has lived in Paris for over twenty-five years after he had to flee from the regime because of his political views. Having received word that his mother is seriously ill, he decides to return to Iraq to visit her in the capital Baghdad. With the help of a guide - a wise and very phlegmatic man - he crosses the border, but then the difficulties begin. Together with his guide, who promises again and again that he will be able to take the filmmaker to Baghdad the next day, Salman drives endlessly around the Kurdish part of Iraq, protected by UN troops, in search of a safe gateway to the Iraqi army-controlled area around Baghdad. Meanwhile, he films with his inconspicuous digital video camera in various Kurdish refugee camps and records testimonies of victims of Saddam Hussein.
