Arlit, Deuxième Paris plot
Arlit is a case study of a uranium mine in Niger. European companies are mining the area for nuclear energy and paying the local population for it through illness, radioactive contamination and unemployment. The population has no choice but to wait; waiting to die from the radiation, unless they themselves go to Europe to look for work. The Tuareg have found a solution: where they used to trade slaves, salt and spices, they now smuggle the distraught inhabitants of Arlit through the Sahara desert to Algeria. From there, the villagers hope to travel on to Europe, for a precarious undocumented existence.
