Even Parisian janitors never know as much about their tenants as the men and women who are often the first and last person they greet in a day for the hundreds of thousands of residents of New York apartment complexes. They stop unwanted visitors, take parcels from the postman and smile open the door for the ever-hurried New Yorkers. Behind that smile hides the certainty that they know everything about you and those who want to be assured of their discretion will have to buy it off with a tip from time to time.
