Ainsi Soit-Il plot

Jean, a pastor in a godforsaken village in the Ardennes, falls in love with Micheline, one of his parishioners. After a secret relationship of five years, they choose to show their love openly and no longer hide. When Jean is 71 years old, they decide to get married. The answer from the Church authorities is not forthcoming: Jean may no longer remain a pastor. The priest, who sees himself as a social assistant avant la lettre, is deeply disappointed, but thanks to his love for Micheline, he finds the strength to fulfill his vocation if necessary through another church. During that period, Manu Bonmariage follows the unusual couple for a year.
