Aan het Hart plot
Marian, the third child in a farming family in the Noordoostpolder, has her brothers investigate the cause of the sudden death of her youngest brother and that of her father, two days later. Does something run in the family? In 2010, two Groningen geneticists discovered the PLN gene, which causes a life-threatening heart disease, which occurs mainly in Friesland, the Noordoostpolder and Noord-Holland. This hereditary trait appears to be responsible for the heart disease in Marian's family. Mirjam Bartelsman speaks to dozens of Marian's relatives about the hereditary 'burden' they (possibly) carry and their motivation to intervene or not.
