A Memory in Three Acts plot
After a bloody struggle of more than ten years, Mozambique gained independence from Portugal in 1975. In three acts (plus a poetic prologue and epilogue), some of those involved tell their story about the struggle for independence. A political prisoner at the time returns to the place where he was tortured: the 'Villa Algarve,' which has since fallen into disrepair, but is preserved as a monument. Many did not survive the torture. The other side of the story is also discussed, through the story of a daughter of an agent of the secret police. Her father was slaughtered before her eyes after the fall of the Portuguese ruler. The striking mix of archive material, contemporary images and the penetrating soundtrack give the feeling that past and present are intertwined. This colonial trauma has many faces and the wound is still fresh, according to the oral testimonies.
