A Girl like Her plot

Between 1945 and 1973, one and a half million unmarried American girls gave up their children for adoption. Because 'nice girls' didn't get pregnant. Decades later it becomes clear how traumatic that event was and how enormous the impact on their further lives. At the time they had no voice, now Fessler gives the floor to about a hundred women. Their anonymous stories are diverse, but have a striking number of similarities; shame, ignorance, ruined family relationships, a wasted future and the grief over their child's separation.
