In Belgium, married couple Bob and Susie Westlake become involved in the sale of a collection of rare books by wealthy financier Steve Mordaunt. When Mordaunt's house is broken into, his lover, Mrs. Rosemary Delgado, comes under suspicion. She once had an affair with a criminal and leads the Westlakes on a quest to find the writings of Achemd, a 14th-century Middle Eastern seer who inspired an extremist political group. Bob's life takes a dark turn when Susie is kidnapped by extremists.
