Under Suspicion plot

"In a world of secrets, the truth is never what it seems."

Veteran Inspector Victor Benezet asks his old friend Henry Hearst to come to the police station to clarify the investigation of a murder case. Hearst, a respected lawyer, doesn't like it because he's expected at a charity ball. Benezet, however, insists. At first it seems to be a routine matter, but it soon becomes apparent that Hearst's statement about how he found the body of a strangled girl is untrue. In addition, Benezet and his young colleague Owens can link the lawyer to another murder of a young girl. The conversation turns into an interrogation, and as Hearst changes his statement and more and more bizarre details from his private life surface, Benezet becomes convinced that his friend is a child murderer...

With an ending like that (which I don't understand by the way) a film can never get a satisfactory rating from me.

An unsung masterpiece.

Saw it for the fourth time yesterday. It remains an extremely atmospheric, brooding film. Good locations, strong acting, successful music, beautifully portrayed. Apart from the fact that many people don't like the ending or don't understand it. I'll make a brief attempt to explain why I like that so much.

The interrogation destroyed Hearst. Sure, there are plenty of suspicions, but you'll never find out if he actually crossed the line: I don't think so. He didn't commit the murders and rapes anyway, the end tells us that. But his wife, who already doubted him, has definitively betrayed him through the interrogation. His relationship with his great love is ruined. Just like his reputation, or what's left of it. This, in combination with the intensifying pressure of the interrogation, means that he might as well confess: he has no reason to live anymore. The fact that in the end it turns out that it wasn't him after all only makes it more wrinkly.

Indeed a heavily underrated masterpiece with a brilliant ending and above all a very human film. This film mainly shows how easily people are misled and steered in a certain direction and how easily someone is destroyed. I myself was in such a phase that everything and everyone turned against me, wrongly, but for me it was the reason to go abroad and leave everything behind. It cost me a lot of money but at least now I have a life again. So I can certainly empathize with the role of Hackman. At a certain moment you have something like "je m'en fou" let them destroy me, for me abroad was the liberation and the only remaining option to survive. The moment when his "wife" wanted to embrace him at the end of the film and he ignored her beam, was the strongest moment of the film for me. Really enjoyed it but also bled during this film because a lot of memories came back to me. 4.5 stars
