Irishman Charles Adare travels to Australia in pursuit of his governor-appointed cousin to amass a fortune. There he comes into contact with a large landowner who wants to do business with him. During a dinner it turns out that Charles knew the wife of the large landowner as a child in Ireland. She is an alcoholic and seems to be on the verge of insanity.
