The Underworld Story plot
"Fighting Reporter Exposes Corruption"
Left-wing journalist and anti-hero Mike Reese publishes a story that leads to massacres by a gangster gang. Reese has therefore been blacklisted by the city, under suspicion of ties to the criminal Carl Durham. Reese shrugs at this information and makes this suspicion come true. Reese is now making a career out of elbowing, until he is part of the editorial board of a regional newspaper in a small town. Not long after, Reese's publication of a sensational murder case threatens to destroy the family of newspaper mogul EJ Stanton. When Stanton's black housekeeper is accused of the newspaper mogul's murder, Reese thinks she can help herself by standing by her side. This quickly turns out to be the wrong decision.
