The Outsiders plot

"They grew up on the outside of society. They weren't looking for a fight. They were looking to belong."

Darrel Curtis tries to raise his two brothers Sodapop and Ponyboy. They belong to the Greasers, a youth gang in the 60s. Ponyboy wants to be a writer and is in love with Cherry, who belongs to a hostile gang, 'the Socs'. When a friend of Ponyboy, Johnny Cade, kills a member of the enemy, their friend Dallas comes to their rescue and hides them in an abandoned church. Here they come to rest and realize what they are actually doing in their lives. Although none of them are wanted by society, they become something of a hero when they save a group of children from a fire. Still, they can't resist fighting the fight with the Socs once and for all.

Nice atmosphere and nice cinematography, but at times really cringe-inducing melancholic and mediocre acting. Nice to hear all those child stars together, but I've seen much better acting in Stand By Me for example. Nice snack, no more than that.

A Francis Ford Coppola gem based on SE Hinton's novel. A coming-of-age film with young actors, who are all breaking through in Hollywood.

Despite all the big names, a very different film. Coppola puts down some good scenes here and there, but at other times the sentiment is so thick that I can't take it seriously anymore. The starting point is nice enough, and the many old surf music creates a nice relaxed atmosphere during the fights. Funnily enough, this music is also sometimes used in the more emotional moments and therefore this same music contrasts in a bizarre way, making a dramatic moment where Soda runs away from home seems like a kind of comedic escape.

Nice to have seen. Coming of age / boys' book story that rattles a bit, lasts just too long, but offers enough viewing pleasure to take a look.

3*
