The Outsider plot

In post-war Japan, American deserter Nick Lowell is released from prison and released into a brutal city. Before him lies a nation where ancient traditions have been suffused with the oil and blood of modern industry. Traditional yakuza families battle their modern-day rivals, led by ruthless criminals. Aimless and haunted by regret, Nick tries to repay a debt owed to his cellmate Kiyoshi and the old Osaka family who bought his freedom.

“I don't speak Japanese...”

Mixed feelings. The zeitgeist, the Yakuza, the sets and cinematography, the acting of some Asian actors etc. It's all interesting, and it all looks beautiful and atmospheric. But the person who wrote the script needs to think about a different career, because a movie about the Yakuza has never been so boring. A film about the Yakuza with Leto in the lead role should produce enough fireworks, but it is all remarkably tame and even boring.

Seriously bad reviews for this Netflix production. And yes, what The Guardian calls for example - the flat story, the list of Japan clichés that is neatly finished - it is all true, but on the other hand it is also appreciable that Zandvliet has not tried the Japanese versions of the genre to do exactly. An own face is exactly what gives this film its strength.

Visually it is very strong by the way, and the soundtrack fits nicely - not an exaggeration to call a term like 'style over substance'. Leto's flat emotionless face as a contrast to the flat emotionless faces of the Yakuza families, but with exactly the same neat suit, and the hairs dyed blue-black. Fits very nicely into the blue cast over most of the images. And the dingy slums of Osaka where they drive around with their shiny black pimps, very striking. Whether it is realistic and historically justified can be stolen a bit for me. I don't really find that criticism justified.

Those who expect a fast action film will also be disappointed, incidentally. It's about the atmosphere, and it builds up slowly, and where the action comes it's fast, often unexpected, and short. But that doesn't make it any less good.

Pretty tame.

The tension is under the skin. At least, that's the intention. In practice, this is the case for the first hour, after that things systematically collapse. Some side plots like the relationship with the sister are very poorly done.

The casting of Jared Leto is also not the best choice. He is much too feminine for his hypothermic role, as if that screaming emo singer in him suddenly wants to be tough. Fortunately, most of his Japanese opponents have some charisma. They often remain weighty glances. In any case, the film is gray in atmosphere, shot tightly and so it fits (and is just the intention).

Nevertheless, it is all a bit too little to really speak of a successful film, the more the settlements and twists are not very surprising.
