Nice film set around the Cotton Club in New York in the late 1920s. The storylines are entertaining, but pretty standard. The musical parts could have been better left out in my opinion, even though they do give the film some atmosphere. Furthermore, a beautiful decoration of the bustling 1920s.

A fairly standard crime story that, as far as I'm concerned, is taken to a slightly higher level by mixing it with musical. I am a fan of jazz and blues and really liked the musical intermezzos. Combined with the decors and attributes, it creates a real 1920s and 1930s atmosphere. By the way, the story of the Cotton Club and its mafia visitors is based on real facts. Most of the characters in the movie like Dutch Schultz, Owney Madden... are based on the real characters. The role of Vincent Dwyer, played by Nicolas Cage, is based on Vincent "Mad Dog" Coll.

Ever seen as a teenager. Not exactly impressed with this drama/crime at the time. With the expectation that this work by Coppola would suit me better, I tried again...but alas.

It must be said that The Cotton Club is without a doubt a special mix of violence and a lot of music. A beautiful image of the time comes to the fore and also the racism of that time. The story translates as a vicious circle of bosses who dismiss, are surpassed, hire people in confidence and then don't trust them anymore. The underworld and its people are suspicious yet again.

Despite the nice music atmosphere and a separately chosen centerpiece, The Cotton Club, the film remains too much for me in a whole where no clear choice is made by Coppola. Especially the first phase of the film I regularly imagine myself in a musical or something similar. Especially when Sandman takes his lady to The Hoover Club where everyone can then perform their trick. Something that adds very little to the film for me. Just like the end, by the way, the farewell to Vera and Dixie , which again takes on musical forms.

It is thanks to the increasing violence in the second part that the film still comes out with a sufficient score. At the very least, it gives the appearance of crime and half a gang war. But it's too little for a top film, especially for me.
