New York, early 1940s. Young criminals Johnny, Bill, Icky, Stinky and Shadow of the Harlem 'Tuff Kids' gang blatantly ignore their patriotic responsibilities when the United States gets involved in World War II. This is pointed out to the 'Tuff Kids' by the tough but friendly police sergeant Holmes. Holmes gives them a crash course in what it means to be a 'Real American'. Before the 'Tuff Kids' are fully re-educated, they are drawn into a murder mystery plot.
