Not a bad debut from Figgis, whose films always have something. Here it is the gloomy atmosphere and ditto music that do much of the work. Griffith lends a hand with that too...

3.5*

Mediocre film in which an American businessman wants to buy the land of a nightclub in New Castle. It takes a while before the plot gets going, but even after that the film remains a bit on the boring side. The film looks good and the whole is certainly atmospheric (the soundtrack contributes to this).

The plot at times seems more of an initiation rather than being fully developed. For example, it never became clear to me why Tommy Lee Jones insists on taking over Sting's music club and what role that plays in his further plans in the region. But his pursuit does guarantee the necessary commotion. The film belongs in the noir street not only in terms of theme but also visually with the chiaroscuro lighting (at times), the typical slats with shadow effect (in the club), the gray city, ... And there is also the name of the club in which Melanie Griffith works as a waitress: WeeGee. 'Coincidentally' the name of the photographer who achieved fame in the 1940s with his bestseller Naked City and is seen as an influence on the noir genre.

The direction and photography are excellent with optimal use of various cityscapes. In terms of acting, everyone could convince me. Loved what Melanie Griffith brings here. And Sting is doing a great job as a club manager. Is it a coincidence that people always talk about the “Polish” band that will perform in his club. Seemed like a phonetic nod to his past as frontman of The Police. In terms of music, however, they have nothing in common. The Polish band brings jazz here, from the melodic kind to atonal stuff and also a hilarious version of The Star Spangled Banner. This jazz fact also ties in with the era of classical noir, which is still referred to. Blues can also be heard on the soundtrack, the title refers to a song by T-Bone Walker that can be heard in the end credits. In addition, moody eighties electro can be heard throughout the film in various scenes. So something for everyone and yet it forms an organic whole.

A film that impresses me mainly because of the excellent atmosphere creation and accompanying acting performances. Very plump.
