Personal Affair plot
"It was too late to run!"
Barbara Vining is a teenager who falls in love with her teacher Stephen Barlow in a small British village. He has no interest in her, except as an apprentice, and does nothing to encourage her behavior. When his wife, Kay Barlow, confronts Barbara, she runs away. Stephen follows her and tries to explain that her feelings are hopeless. When she doesn't come home, the rumors begin. Barbara's father, an intelligent man, is torn by his paternal love and wisdom. Her aunt, a neurotic old woman, is happy with the situation. Barlow is found guilty of several crimes, without evidence, and his marriage and career are ruined.
