Jailbreak plot

Mike Eagan is a former criminal who has been on the straight and narrow for several years. When threatened by gangsters, led by Ed Slayden, he knocks down a cop, hoping to be put in jail for a month for his own protection. Mike unfortunately receives a longer prison sentence than expected, but once the bad guys' plot is discovered, he is paroled. Unfortunately, on the day of release, he is found dead in his cell. It's up to Mike's trusty secretary Jane and an eager reporter named Ken to get to the bottom of the murder, aided and sometimes hindered by Detective Captain Rourke.
