"Every street in Marseilles led to her doorway!"

Canadian Eric Martin falls in love with the prostitute Dolores after his freighter calls at the port of Marseille. Dolores, who works at the Kitcat Club, promises to wait for Eric when his ship leaves again. Along the way, Eric is robbed of his money and passport by Aime and Victor, who threaten Dolores not to report them. When Eric wakes up in the hospital, he can't provide the police with enough useful information. After his recovery, Eric goes to the 'Kitcat Club', where Dolores witnesses Aime kick him out and force her into hiding. Eric finds work as a guide and gets to know the gypsy Danielle. One night Eric and Danielle meet Aime and Victor and a fight ensues, in which Victor dies. Danielle, now in love with Eric, helps him go into hiding. Eric, still in love with Dolores, arranges forged papers and goes in search of her under the name Hans Marin. However, the police have released Aime on the condition that he trace Eric.
