Samuel Brunner has been in prison for murder for five years. The discovery of the corpse proves that he is innocent, so he is released. Lawyer Anna Notrup sees an opportunity for a new trial and tries to reconstruct the case. Samuel fears that some people will not accept this. Soon Anna is opposed by the inhabitants of a remote village in the Black Forest.
