A decent film in which a woman reconnects with a man she's been in love with for years. It's rather dialogue-driven, and as a result, sometimes a bit dull and tedious. The love triangle is well-developed, and the acting is also good (Claude Rains stands out in a positive way, partly due to his performance). Just shy of 3.5 stars.

A melodrama centered around the love triangle of Claude Rains, Bette Davis, and Paul Henreid. Paul Henreid plays a Czech immigrant and talented cellist. He has an accent that's fitting here, and it immediately adds half of his credibility. Claude Rains, as the eccentric genius composer, comes across as very antipathetic and affected, but the longer the film went on, the more I connected with his portrayal. Finally, we have Bette Davis in the lead role as a femme fatale oscillating between past and present, and she does a fantastic job.

The scene that will probably stay with me the most – and is indicative of the relationships between them – is the restaurant dinner of the not-so-cheerful trio where Claude Rains sees fit to show off his knowledge of haute cuisine

The film is directed by Irving Rapper and gives a dynamic and polished impression, partly thanks to the cinematography of Ernest Haller, which subtly uses chiaroscuro nuances.

The story - based on a play - is set in a classical music scene where the viewer is treated to the score of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, whose 'Hollenius Concerto' - as the realization of Rains' character - sounds quite high-quality.

It's also worth noting that Joan Crawford, Bette Davis's famous rival, had a role that same year in Humoresque (1946), which also features a love triangle within the classical music scene. However, I find this Deception to be a class above the rest, both in terms of the screenplay and the characterization.
