The influences of Tarantino and especially Guy Ritchie in this Dutch production are evident

present. Which sometimes (for lack of own vision?) seems a bit forced. But in its entirety

I found this film to be quite enjoyable, quite thorough and entertaining, and I found a few

with few exceptions, pretty much all the actors do just fine. You could possibly ask

that it suits the director with this un-Dutch approach, but he lacks for the time being

own signature.

It is quite obvious that the names Tarantino and Ritchie are always mentioned when it comes to Black Out, because it is more than clear where the inspiration comes from for this crime comedy. You could call Black Out a great tribute to those films, but you could just as well say that Arne Toonen could be a bit more quirky and unique in style, it is now a decent one on one copy, a little less exactly imitating Tarantino or Ritchie had been stronger. Still, Black Out is entertaining.

It's especially nice that they go all out in terms of colorful supporting characters and accompanying supporting actors. The lead roles are not that interesting, the role of the mumbling Thiry didn't do much for me and the role of Kim van Kooten was completely meaningless. But the garlands of this party are hung by types like Van Warmerdam, Classen, De Hoog, Cohen and Keijzer. Katja and Birgit Schuurman are handy in marketing, but more unknown actresses would have been better in that role. The Schuurman sisters are not that badass. Furthermore, Black Out is mainly fun entertainment. It doesn't take too long, certain dialogues and visual tricks work fine and especially the action is surprisingly well done.

3.5 stars.

Ex-criminal Jos Vreeswijk [Raymond Thiry] wakes up in a hotel room with a badly mutilated body, but has no idea how he got there. Inevitably he is overtaken by his past in the form of the psychotic drug lord Vlad [Simon Armstrong], a former ballet dancer, who demands that Jos bring out a load of cocaine or else... Toonen's second feature film (after Dik Trom) is, admittedly, emphatic. inspired by the comedy crime films of Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie, but he also keeps the pace excellent and thanks to an enthusiastic and carefully selected cast (including Katja and Birgit Schuurman as Vlad's 'enforcers' and Ursul de Geer as Jos' rakish lawyer) it can stand on its own two feet. Willie Wartaal and the Eindhoven rapper Kempi score as the owners of a dog grooming salon who, despite their lack of experience, try to make a profit from the chaos and Van Warmerdam is very funny as the cynical detective. The final at a bowling alley is memorable.
