The young composer Viktor Honzl searches in vain for work. His suicide attempt by gassing himself fails because the gas is turned off just in time because he has not paid the bill. Disguised as an old man, he finds a job, where he can also court Eva, the daughter of publicist Durdys. He advises Durdys to also take on his nephew, in reality himself without disguise.
