Yes Man plot

"One Word Can Change Everything."

When Carl Allen (Jim Carrey) has had yet another run-in with others and with himself, he decides it can't go on like this. He enrolls in a kind of course based on a principle: say 'Yes' to everything. Initially Carl likes this, but when it takes longer he realizes that an agreeing answer to all questions also has less pleasant sides.

Sometime after Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Carrey's career seemed to lose steam. I think there was still a small success here and there, but nowhere did he seem like one of the big comedic stars, as he was in the 90s and early 2000s. Well, Carrey has always been a strong love-it-or-hate-it actor, with the exception of atypical contributions to The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine, among others, but I've always had a soft spot for him and his manic side.

Yes Man falls a bit between the completely comical Carrey and the more serious. This is not a full-blown comedy, because despite the humor, time is also spent building up his depression. This makes the story more palpable and, in my opinion, ensures that the obligatory, serious twist of the third act works, although clearly few users agree with me; perhaps on principle.

Other than that, this isn't a groundbreaking film, because it feels a bit familiar and it rarely became really funny for me. Yet it works in a way. It helps that the fact is quite stimulating and that the makers also make some grotesque jokes with it, such as with the Persian bride or the neighbor. Something in me might have loved to see a totally over-the-top movie with all these elements, but as a slightly more character-driven comedy with a friendly moral it works quite nicely.
3.5*

“The era of "yes" has begun."

Say 'yes' to everything. I would mostly find it tiring. But in Yes Man, Jim Carrey takes up the challenge and the result is a funny film that colors too much within the lines. Of course Carl (Carrey) eventually has to learn a life lesson, and of course that includes a new girlfriend.

Saying 'yes' to everything results in many fun situations, but the film is not really comical. Carrey is good and the other actors are doing well too. But the sentiment and the moralistic tone will get in the way at some point. The fun is a bit off and so is the sharpness. Too bad, because Yes Man is at his best when Carrey says yes to everything.

Pretty nice. Carrey is very much Carrey again, someone who can do a trick and makes a movie stronger with it, only sometimes going into overdrive. Fortunately, that is not so bad in this film and this thing is mostly enjoyable. Some great jokes, nice interaction with Deschanel and a nice flow.
It's a pity that towards the end there has to be another break, some unnecessary drama to eventually get it right again. If you just let that kind of nonsense, because it detracts from this film, which otherwise would certainly have scored higher. 3.0*.
