Weg van Jou plot

The urban Evi is reluctantly transferred by her employer from hip Rotterdam to quiet Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Refusing is not an option, her career stands or falls with success in the Zeeland region. She leaves her comfortable city life of going out and consuming a lot and starts her new life in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen by trial and error. It turns out that not all are unintelligible Zeelanders there when Evi meets skipper Stijn in Terneuzen. Would she still settle in the Zeeland clay or would she prefer to return as soon as possible to her friend Lennaert who stayed in Rotterdam?

Another questionable basic plot: the irritating, ambitious Evi [Katja Herbers] is adamant that she's being transferred to Rio. She has even made plans to move with her boyfriend Lennaert [Lykele Muus], so it comes as a downer when she is transferred... to Terneuzen! Of course Evi is so unworldly (and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen portrayed so caricatured) that this had to result in many amusing moments. As I expected based on the trailer, 'Weg Van Jou' completely misses the mark there. It is the appearance of Stijn [Maarten Heijmans] that breathes life into the film. Of course it is no surprise at all how the film ends, and it also takes an unnecessarily long time before it finally comes to that, but Heijman's natural playing does provide some striking moments, also because the chemistry between him and Herbers is clear and that adds a pleasant touch of romance to this otherwise pretty bland rombow.

Away From You

After a bad start I feared the worst. But Weg van Jou is quite entertaining, and especially after the story moves to Zeeland it gets a lot better. Herbers and Heijmans are also a nice duo, and despite all the clichés about Zeeland, the images of the vast landscapes and beaches are beautiful. Who wants to live in Rotterdam… I definitely feel like getting a breath of fresh air on the beach.

A pleasant trip to Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, which in my experience belongs much more to Belgium (Flanders) than to the Netherlands (Zeeland). The predictable story doesn't really matter that much. Katja Herbers plays an excellent leading role in this unhurried film about the cultural differences between people from the Randstad and the Zeeland-Flemish countryside with beautiful shots of that countryside and of the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe.

The film suggests that from Terneuzen Saeftinghe is just around the corner. That is of course not the case. I estimate that there are at least 25 to 30 km between them.
